CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Max was deep in thought as she sewed and a knock on the door made her jump. Detective Cruz entered, and she smiled when she saw him. She was looking forward to her date with Brian, but he didnât make her pulse race the way the detective did. If she thought the detective had any interest in her, would she even go out with Brian? Well, she couldnât just sit around waiting, and it was about time she started dating again. Brian was nice, and easy on the eyes, and it wasnât a big deal to go out with an old friend, was it?
She noticed the detective was holding a bag, and she hoped there was food in it.
âI brought sandwiches. I've got pastrami, turkey and ham, so I hope thereâs something both of you like out of those choices.â
âFrom Joeâs Deli?â Max asked. When he nodded, she said, âThey make the best pastrami sandwiches!â
âPastrami it is,â Cruz said and pulled the sandwich out of the bag.
âUnless someone else wants it,â Max said, trying to be unselfish. She hoped no one took her up on the offer.
âIâll take the ham, if thatâs okay,â Keiko said, and Cruz handed her a sandwich.
âGood thing I like turkey,â he said. âOf course, I bought the three kinds I like.â He turned to Max. âCan we talk somewhere?â
âSure. Letâs take our lunch out to the patio in back.â
Max grabbed a couple of bottles of water, and she and Cruz walked out the side door of the theater and around to the back. Behind the theater was a large patio with café tables and chairs. It had a view of the ocean and was used for opening night receptions and other events. As Max unwrapped her sandwich, she watched the sailboats out on the water gliding by.
"Are you still looking for Ivan?" she asked. "I mean, if the case is closed, and all that."
"Ivan was here illegally, so of course it's police business."
"Uh-huh." She didn't believe for a second that's why he was looking for Ivan. He'd been a loose thread in the investigation into Celeste's death that he claimed he wasnât investigating.
âI hoped to hear what youâve learned,â he said, changing the subject. "I know I said Celesteâs death was ruled an accident, but that doesnât mean Iâm not going to follow any new leads."
âWhat do you suspect?â she asked. âOr should I say who?â
âAll the other bolts on the balcony and stairs were well tightened, and only the four bolts that held that top rail were loose. And even then, I donât see how two bolts would have come out completely, unless there were no nuts, and that makes no sense. It just seems suspicious to me. Like it was designed to make us think it was an accident. As for who I suspect, Iâm not sure. But if someone is at fault, Iâll find out who it was.â
Max liked his determination. She admitted that she had learned little to nothing. "They always say to look at the spouse.
