CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Max was deep in thought as she sewed and a knock on the door made her jump. Detective Cruz entered, and she smiled when she saw him. She was looking forward to her date with Brian, but he didn’t make her pulse race the way the detective did. If she thought the detective had any interest in her, would she even go out with Brian? Well, she couldn’t just sit around waiting, and it was about time she started dating again. Brian was nice, and easy on the eyes, and it wasn’t a big deal to go out with an old friend, was it?

She noticed the detective was holding a bag, and she hoped there was food in it.

“I brought sandwiches. I've got pastrami, turkey and ham, so I hope there’s something both of you like out of those choices.”

“From Joe’s Deli?” Max asked. When he nodded, she said, “They make the best pastrami sandwiches!”

“Pastrami it is,” Cruz said and pulled the sandwich out of the bag.

“Unless someone else wants it,” Max said, trying to be unselfish. She hoped no one took her up on the offer.

“I’ll take the ham, if that’s okay,” Keiko said, and Cruz handed her a sandwich.

“Good thing I like turkey,” he said. “Of course, I bought the three kinds I like.” He turned to Max. “Can we talk somewhere?”

“Sure. Let’s take our lunch out to the patio in back.”

Max grabbed a couple of bottles of water, and she and Cruz walked out the side door of the theater and around to the back. Behind the theater was a large patio with café tables and chairs. It had a view of the ocean and was used for opening night receptions and other events. As Max unwrapped her sandwich, she watched the sailboats out on the water gliding by.

"Are you still looking for Ivan?" she asked. "I mean, if the case is closed, and all that."

"Ivan was here illegally, so of course it's police business."

"Uh-huh." She didn't believe for a second that's why he was looking for Ivan. He'd been a loose thread in the investigation into Celeste's death that he claimed he wasn’t investigating.

“I hoped to hear what you’ve learned,” he said, changing the subject. "I know I said Celeste’s death was ruled an accident, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to follow any new leads."

“What do you suspect?” she asked. “Or should I say who?”

“All the other bolts on the balcony and stairs were well tightened, and only the four bolts that held that top rail were loose. And even then, I don’t see how two bolts would have come out completely, unless there were no nuts, and that makes no sense. It just seems suspicious to me. Like it was designed to make us think it was an accident. As for who I suspect, I’m not sure. But if someone is at fault, I’ll find out who it was.”

Max liked his determination. She admitted that she had learned little to nothing. "They always say to look at the spouse.
